In 2005, Kendall and his wife Ginger started hatching chicks in their two-car detached garage. The operation eventually expanded and was launched as Fox Farm & Hatchery, Inc. The Foxes then purchased the Freedom Ranger brand and incorporated the business under the name Freedom Ranger Hatchery, Inc.

More About the Kosher King Chicken

Our hatcheries’ breed of Kosher Kings produces excellent foraging birds, meaning they’re happy to control insects and other undesirables in a free-range environment. They have the same docile personalities as their cousins, Freedom Ranger broiler chickens—as well as the same succulent, healthful meat.

Many of our Kosher King chickens are sold to growers raising for ethnic food markets. The Kosher King comes for the same female line as the Freedom Ranger but has a different male line specifically for the feather color. Freedom Ranger and Kosher king production and conformation will be almost identacle.

The Kosher King originated by crossing heritage breeds like the Barred Rock and the Sussex. Because of this, you’ll notice color variations in King chickens—with 80% being black-and-white barred and 20% being a mix of silver and red.

The Kosher King chicken is a cousin to the Freedom Ranger chicken, so they share many of the same qualities. These include a moderate growth rate (9-11 weeks until they reach 5-6 pounds), tender meat that is lower in saturated fat and higher in omega 3s than other faster-growing breeds, and a knack for thriving in free-range environments.
